Suncoast Waterkeeper is committed to environmental protection through environmental monitoring.  We regularly monitor water quality but want to expand our efforts to monitor ecosystems promoting clean water.  One of the most important ecosystems on our coasts is mangrove forests.  Unfortunately, mangroves in Manatee County are under enormous development pressure.  Using drones annually, we aim to map the extent and health of mangroves in vulnerable areas We need your help!

We must assemble 3-5 teams of 4 to map mangroves from December through early January to accomplish our goal.  Each team will consist of

  1. a licensed drone pilot,
  2. a boat owner, and
  3. a spotter (no experience necessary)
  4. data manager

We will kick off this Mangrove Ranger program with a training meeting on Saturday, January 20, from 9:30 AM – 11 AM at the Bahia Mar West Marina on N. US 41 in Bradenton (just north of the airport).  Coffee, water, and baked goods from Mama G’s will be provided.  Please save the date!  During the meeting, you will receive a training manual, be assigned to a team if you haven’t already assembled your own, and be given instructions and a location for conducting your first mangrove mapping project.  Also, during the meeting, you will work with your team to schedule your drone flight.  Flights should take no more than 30 minutes once you arrive to the location.  Flights must be scheduled on or before February 4.

If you are interested but unavailable on January 20,  please let us know when you are available for training.  Thank you so much for your support! Together, we can protect what we love about the Suncoast.

Protect and preserve our local bays through the Love Your Bays Consciously campaign! This campaign will be a year-long effort beginning in Summer 2024 to recruit, manage, and train volunteers who proactively and reactively tackle ever-growing threats to clean water in our local bays.

Wondering how you can Love Your Bays Consciously? Here are three key actions:
1) Protect Aquatic Habitats
2) Reduce Pollution
3) Help Your Community

Beginning this summer, we will recruit volunteers and business owners to become ambassadors for the Love Your Bays Consciously campaign.  Donations received from the 2024 Giving Challenge will be used to fund this effort.  Join us in adopting these actions and to Love Your Bays Consciously.

Together, we can create a future where clean water and thriving ecosystems are the norm, not the exception.
